How to Make Your Braids Last 6-8 Weeks (and Actually Mean It)

We've all been there. Fresh install, looking immaculate - and two weeks later it's looking more tired than you feel on a Monday morning. The truth is, how long your braids last has less to do with the hair and more to do with how you treat it. Here's exactly what to do.

Section, twist and protect before bed

This is the one most people skip and the one that makes the biggest difference. Before you go to sleep, section and twist or braid your hair down. Then wrap it with a satin bonnet or swap your pillowcase for a satin one. Cotton pulls moisture from your hair and causes frizz overnight - satin keeps everything smooth and your curl pattern intact.

Refresh with water and leave-in conditioner

Your braids need moisture too. Mix water and a light leave-in conditioner in a spray bottle and refresh your hair every few days - focusing on the length and the ends. Don't drench it, just a light mist. This keeps the hair looking fresh and stops it drying out mid-install.

Keep heavy oils off the braids

A little goes a long way. Heavy oils applied directly to your braids cause build-up that weighs the hair down and makes it look dull faster. If you want to add shine, opt for a light oil sheen spray instead - it gives you the finish without the residue.

Separate gently and regularly

As your install settles, the waves and curls can start to merge together. Gently separate them with your fingers every few days to maintain volume and definition. Don't pull - just ease them apart.

Look after your scalp

Your scalp health directly impacts how your braids look and feel. Keep it clean and moisturised throughout your install - a light scalp oil applied with a nozzle applicator works well without disturbing the braids themselves.

Follow these steps consistently and 6-8 weeks is very achievable. Your hair, your investment - protect it.
